Here Is What Happened To Dane Cook And Why He Needs A Comeback

It is a story that has been told multiple times in Hollywood. A personality is at the top of his craft, with national and international fame, then something happens and they fade away. This is a sad phenomenon that fans wish never happens to their favs but life doesn’t always let us choose, and fans of Dane Cook have had to deal with this unwanted reality.

Dane Cook, an actor, and a comedian is mostly known for his work as the latter and has achieved feats like being the second comedian ever to sell out the Madison Square Garden. From those highs, he has become a peripheral figure in American comedy, and in this article, we discuss what happened to the actor/comedian. Check it out.

What Happened to Dane Cook?

To fully understand why the fall of Dane Cook is newsworthy, a reminder of how big he was as a comedian is necessary. He had begun his career in the early 1990s, performing in comedy clubs and in 1998, he got his big break when he appeared on the Comedy Central show, Premium Blend. From Premium Blend, he got a half-hour special on Comedy Central Presents and was performing across American colleges in sold-out shows.

At the stroke of the new millennium, Dane Cook had become one of the most popular comedians in America and this reflected when he released his first comedy album, Harmful If Swallowed, selling more than 1.2 million copies. Subsequent album releases like Retaliation and Vicious Circle were equally successful, and just as he was at the peak of his career, selling sold-out shows at mega venues like the Madison Square Garden, his fall began.

So, what happened to Dane Cook? The fall of the comedian was a combination of a few things, and we talk about them below.

His Films Flopped

For comedians, expanding the scope of their career by attracting new fans is a way to solidify their place in the industry and Dane Cook’s attempt at doing so through films was unsuccessful.

He appeared in films like Good Luck Chuck, Waiting... and Dan in Real Life but while they did not necessarily fail at the box office, they were not popular enough to make him into a movie star. Despite attempts at switching genres to more dramatic roles, Dane Cook was never able to get his career as a movie star off the ground.

His Parents Died

Another thing that happened to Dane Cook and caused his demise from the top of the game was the passing of his parents. His mother passed away in 2006 and his father passed shortly after, in 2007.

His Business Manager Embezzled his Money

Shortly after the passing of his parents, Dane Cook discovered that his business manager, who’s also his half brother, along with his wife, had embezzled an estimated $18 million from him. They were subsequently convicted and sentenced to prison.

A combination of his parents’ death and the embezzlement case forced him to take some time off work, leading to the fourth thing that happened to Dane Cook.

His Audience Outgrew his Jokes

Dane Cook stormed to national fame within a short period because of his comedy style, which was geared towards younger audiences. Unfortunately, by the time he returned, his fanbase had outgrown his comedy, and he struggled to gain back the traction that led to his fame.

Combined with accusations of plagiarism and shocking performances that caused controversies, Dane Cook found it difficult to return to his peak as a comedian.

Although Dane Cook never really went away – he continued to appear in movies and TV shows, along with playing in small comedy clubs, the actor/comedian has been planning a mega comeback with his Tell It Like It Is Tour.

After everything that has happened to him, he needs the comeback to truly establish himself as a real comedian and live the dream he had as a child who once watched an episode of The Tonight Show and told his mother that he would become a stand-up comedian.

According to the comedian himself, he is going on a comeback because he is ready to drop the cardboard cutout (a reference to an episode of The Tonight Show he watched where George Carlin took a cutout of a character he was known for, proclaimed that it wasn’t him and let it fall out of the frame).

Here’s hoping the comedian has a successful comeback.
