If there is any indication at all that Tyreek Hill might be the fastest player on the field of play whenever he is laced up, it is the fact that he is nicknamed Cheetah. The American football player, who can play as either a return specialist or a wide receiver, was a part of the Kansas City Chiefs team that won Super Bowl LIV in 2019. Prior to him winning a championship, Hill had shown that he deserved to be playing on the biggest stage by earning a Pro-Bowl selection every year since he entered the league in 2016. He has further received three All-Pro Team honors and made the 2016 PFWA All-Rookie Team as well as the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
Who is Tyreek Hill?
The NFL player was raised by a single mother named Virginia Hill who gave birth to him on March 1, 1994, in Lauderhill, Florida. Tyreek is, however, a native of Pearson, Georgia where he ended up attending school.
Tyreek Hill was enrolled at Pearson Elementary in Pearson, Georgia before he attended Coffee High School in Douglas, Georgia. Here, the young man displayed excellent athletic ability as a part of his school’s track team. In 2012, his achievements earned him the Track and Field News “High School Athlete of the Year” award as well as a USA Today All-American track and field selection.
Hill proceeded to get his college education at the Garden City Community College where he continued to display his athletic prowess by running track and joining the school’s football team. His performances as a part of his college’s team meant that he became a highly sought-after junior college recruit. Subsequently, he agreed to join the Oklahoma State University program.
Tyreek Hill proved to be an excellent addition to the team as he recorded 1,811 all-purpose yards and 6 touchdowns playing as either a running back, wide receiver, or returner in his first year with the side. The player’s achievements on the field were, however, overshadowed by the fact that he was arrested for domestic violence and so he was dismissed from both the school’s football and track team.
Hill was left with no option but to find another school and so he enrolled at the University of West Alabama for his senior year. Tiger’s coach Brett Gilliland, who initially turned him down due to his problem with the law but later opted to give him a chance, used the player as a running back, wide receiver, punt returner, and kick returner. His performances, however, left much to be desired by NFL teams and so he was projected to go undrafted at the 2016 NFL Draft. His domestic violence arrest also made a lot of teams shy away from looking at him and so he was not invited to the NFL combine.
How He Managed to Still Have a Professional Career
Despite the domestic violence case that was hanging over his head, Tyreek Hill was able to keep his head down and work hard to impress potential teams. While he was not invited to the NFL Combine, he managed to showcase his abilities at West Alabama’s Pro Day where numerous scouts were reported to have been impressed with his workouts. Regardless of this, the player was still projected to not be drafted but as things later panned out, he was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round of the draft with the 165th overall pick.
The Chiefs received wide criticism from fans for signing the player but the team clarified that they thoroughly vetted the player before deciding to give him a chance. This move has proven to be one of the better ones by the organization in terms of giving themselves a chance at winning a championship as Tyreek Hill has continued to show that his talents are top class.
The player finished his rookie season with 6 touchdowns and 61 receptions for 593 receiving yards to earn a Pro Bowl invite and a First-team All-Pro selection as a punt returner. He was further named to that season’s NFL All-Rookie Team. Hill kept up his performances in his second season and so earned a second straight Pro Bowl selection as a return specialist. He managed a third straight Pro Bowl selection and was also named first-team All-Pro in the “flex” position and second-team All-Pro as a wide receiver after recording a career-high 87 receptions for 1,479 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2018.
2019 turned out to be the year that the gamble by the Kansas Chiefs would pay off as the team went on to win Super Bowl LIV on the back of Hill’s performance that sparked their comeback against the San Francisco 49ers.
A Look At His Injuries Over the Years
Tyreek Hill’s first notable injury was on his ankle in the first half of a game against the Baltimore Ravens in the 2018 season. Although his team ended up winning, the injury posed a huge threat to the Chiefs’ success that season but the player was able to recuperate very fast. His next injury came in the 2019 season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars where he injured his shoulder and had to be sidelined for a couple of games. It was reported that he suffered a posteriorly dislocated sternoclavicular joint. He spent about five weeks on the sidelines before returning to action.
How Rich is Tyreek Hill?
Tyreek Hill is reported to have a net worth of about $20 million which is largely due to his contracts in the NFL. The first deal that the youngster signed with the Chiefs was a four-year contract worth $2.58 million. The contract which he signed on 17th May 2016 guaranteed him only $100,000 and came with a signing bonus of $70,000.
Following years of him being one of the best performers on the team, the Chiefs offered him a contract extension at the beginning of the 2019 season. The player went on to pen a $54 million 3-year extension.
Hill’s Chaotic Relationship With Crystal Espinal
Tyreek Hill had been in a longterm relationship with Crystal Espinal, his girlfriend since his time at Oklahoma State. She was the one who he physically abused even though she was pregnant with his child at the time. According to reports, Hill tried to strangle Crystal during an argument between the two at his apartment. She later pressed charges against him and he pleaded guilty to all. He spent some time behind bars after which he was forced to take anger management classes.
Towards the end of 2018, Tyreek reportedly got engaged to the mother of his 3-year-old son named Zev. He was said to have proposed during a low-key night out. However, another crisis hit their relationship about a year later as Crystal accused the player of physically abusing their son. Hill was investigated by the NFL but no disciplinary action was later taken.
It is not clear if the couple have been able to patch up things ever since or if the player has moved on to date another person.
