Thompson averaged 8.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 60 game plays in the 2011/12 season. He also made history, being the first Canadian to be named to NBA All-Rookie second team.

In his second season with the Cavaliers, Thompson became the second person in the NBA and first in his team to record 306 offensive rebounds in a season. Thus, setting a franchise record of Most Offensive Rebounds in a single season for Cavaliers. Thompson started 82 games, averaging 11.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 31 double-doubles, hence, becoming the ninth player in franchise history to total 30 double-doubles in a single season.
