Tia Maria Torres was welcomed into the world on June 11, 1960. Details regarding her birthplace have not been disclosed but she was raised in a broken home in Southern California by her stepmother. Besides the fact that Torres had a troubled childhood, nothing else is known about her biological parents and the circumstances surrounding their marriage.
Tia’s love for animals stemmed from the deep longing to have a loving family while growing up. Thus as a young girl, she found succor in catering for stray animals. Thankfully, her stepmom was also an animal lover and supported her new ‘family recruitment’. Though Tia grew up without a father figure in her life, she credits her stepmother for instilling the required virtues in her.
There is no record of Tia Torres’ educational background and it is uncertain if she had the conventional basic education. With a mindset to dedicate her life to helping vulnerable animals, Torres decided to leave home as a teenager in the company of her new animal family consisting of dogs, goats, and horses, among others.

She later joined the US Army where she worked as a truck driver. Tia Torres’ passion for animals was reignited again after she encountered and fell head over heels in love with a female pit bull at an animal shelter. She did not hesitate to adopt the adorable canine called Tatanka. It was Tatanka that inspired Tia Torres to eventually establish the Villalobos Rescue Center which is today renowned as the largest pit bull animal shelter in the country. The rescue facility was initially opened in California and became popular in 1999 following a merger with the LA City Animal Services to form The Pit Bull Support Group which provided a range of cognate dog services.
It was during this time that Tia Torres caught the attention of reality TV producers. Although she originally turned down several offers from different production companies, Torres later accepted that of the popular Pit Bulls & Parolee show. Animal Planet fans may recognize her from the 2009 reality television series. It was thereafter that Tia relocated the rescue center to New Orleans, Louisiana.
