Being the daughter of two renowned Hollywood actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, it is no surprise that Sosie Bacon chose to tow the path of her parents as she herself is also an excellent actor. She was exposed to the camera for the first time at the age of 12 in the 2005 movie Loverboy, which was directed by her father and there, Sosie played the role of a 10-year-old version of Emily (her mother’s character). As a result of her amazing performance, the producer of the television police procedural, The Closer, was compelled to recommend her for the role of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson’s niece named Charlie in season five of the series.
Even though her parents never wanted her to become an actress, Sosie Bacon took the role, appearing in four episodes together with her mother who portrayed the character of Chief Johnson. Sosie eventually grew to become a household name as a result of her outstanding performances in television series such as Scream, 13 Reasons Why, and Story of a Girl.
Who is Sosie Bacon?
Born as Sosie Ruth Bacon on March 15, 1992, in Los Angeles, California, the actress was named after Sosie Hublitz, the art director of Miss Rose White owing to the fact that her mother, actress Kyra Sedgwick, had her not long after filming the movie in which she played a lead role. Even though her parents had a very successful career in the acting industry which was accompanied by the glitz and glamour often associated with Hollywood, they wanted their daughter to have a ‘normal life’ and consequently, provided her with a fairly ordinary upbringing. They also did not want her to be involved in acting but fate happened!
Sosie Bacon was a former student of Riverdale Country School in the Bronx and was raised in the Jewish faith alongside other kids in the neighbourhood. She has an elder brother named Travis.
While directing the film Loverboy, Sosie’s father, Kevin Bacon, decided to cast her in a flashback scene as a 10-year-old version of Emily, the character portrayed by her mother as an adult in the family drama. Little Sosie appeared in the movie singing the song ‘Life on Mars?’ by David Bowie. Her brother Travis Bacon, also appeared in the film in a smaller role.
Speaking of the reason behind choosing his daughter for the role, Kevin Bacon, who said it was a decision he made as a director, not as a father, added that he was convinced that Sosie was the perfect fit for the role and true to this, she delivered on the role. Even though she earned her father’s praise for her performance, he made it clear that he will not encourage her to go beyond that in acting.
As fate would have it, James Duff, the producer of the TV series The Closer, having seen Sosie’s rare acting talent through her performance, took it upon himself to make her parents see the potential in their daughter and allow her to express it. Although his initial intention to write the then-12-year-old Sosie Bacon into the series was strongly opposed by her mother, who portrays the character of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on the show, she and her husband eventually agreed for her to have a brief role in the show as long as it did not interfere with her academics, Duff said.
Narrating her own side of the story, Sosie’s mom said James Duff told her his intention and she promised to discuss it with her husband but rather than wait for their response, the producer went directly to her daughter and offered her the role which she accepted. At that point she said, there was no turning back. Sosie Bacon eventually appeared in four episodes of the show, playing the role of Charlie. Sequel to playing this role, the young actress got into Brown University and also studied at musical theatre company Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21). In 2012, she featured in Dan Mills and Randy Redd’s Off-Broadway musical, Fiction in Photographs.
In 2013, Sosie Bacon took part in Miss Golden Globe beauty pageant competition and was chosen as the winner by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, replacing the daughter of Clint Eastwood and Frances Fisher, Francesca Eastwood. During her reign in 2014, Sosie appeared in a lead female role as Cassie opposite Chance Kelly in the independent film Off Season. In the same year, she played the roles of Maggie and Lady in the short films Another Life and Lady Lonely.
She portrayed the character of Rachel Murray in five episodes of Scream within 2015-2016 and followed it up in 2016-2017 with her appearance as Skye Miller in 15 episodes of 13 Reasons Why. She was also cast in a main role in the HBO series Here and Now, which was canceled after one season.
