Shawn Mendes is among the fast-rising Canadian music artists who are currently taking the pop music genre by the storm. The singer first garnered fame in 2013 via the video-sharing platform, Vine. Through his stints on the platform, he won the attention of Andrew Gentler, a highly revered artist manager, as well as Ziggy Charlton, Island Records A&R.

The prolific music star was born as Shawn Peter on the 8th day of August 1998 and his birth took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born to a real estate agent mother Karen, and her husband, Manuel who is a businessman, Shawn grew up along with a sister named Aaliyah. He holds Canadian nationality and is of mixed ethnicity of Portuguese and English.

Growing up, Shawn spent his early years in Pickering, Ontario where he completed his basic education at Pine Ridge Secondary School. While he was there, he was actively involved in a lot of things including soccer, hockey, and acting. He was equally a member of the high school glee club before graduating in June 2016.

Musical Career and Rise to Prominence

Shawn Mendes learned how to play the guitar by watching YouTube tutorial videos at the age of 14. Afterward, he opened a YouTube account and started uploading cover videos on the platform. In 2013, he gained wide attention after posting the cover of Justin Bieber’s song As Long As You Love Me on Vine. Not long after that, his popularity started growing and by August 2014, he was the 3rd most-followed musician on Vine. He also won Ryan Seacrest’s Best Cover Song contest with Say Something by A Great Big World.

2014 was a successful year for the young artist as he was discovered by Andrew Gertler, an artist manager who later helped him secure a record deal with Island Records in May 2014. That was the turning point in his career. Shawn Mendes launched his first hit single titled Life of the Party in June, hence becoming the youngest musician to debut with the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed it up with an Extended Play which reached No. 5 in the Billboard 200 in July 2014.

Later in the same year, he released his second single, Something Big. He also won a Teen Choice award for Webstar in Music. The following year, he launched his first full-length album titled Handwritten. Upon release, the album topped the Billboard 200 chart and also sold over 106,000 copies in the first week. More so, his third single from the album, Stitches also peaked at No 4 in the US Billboard Hot 100. Following his meteoric rise to fame, he was listed among Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014. He also made the list of 30 Most Influential Teens of 2015.

Mendes made his first film appearance in 2016, featuring in the third season of the American sci-fi drama series, The 100. He also embarked on a world tour tagged the Shawn Mendes World Tour which saw him playing over 38 shows in North America and Europe. The music star also dropped his second full-length studio album, Illuminate in September 2016. After its release, the album topped the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum.

In 2018, he launched his third self-titled musical album. The album was dropped in May 2018 and it garnered critical reviews; thus reaching the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 music chart. The following year, in 2019, he announced his upcoming fourth album and the album’s lead single If I Can’t Have You was released in May 2019.
