The sports journalist was born as Seth Vincent Greenberg on April 18, 1956, in Plainview, New York where he was also raised. His parents were named Ralph Greenberg (father) and Marilyn Greenberg (mother). Seth holds the passport of the United States of America and comes from the White Caucasian ethnic background. He has an elder brother named Brad Greenberg who also worked as a basketball coach. The sportscaster still has one other brother whose name and details have not been ascertained.
Available records show that he attended John F. Kennedy High School in Plainview where he was famous for playing in his high school basketball team. After completing high school, he proceeded to Fairleigh Dickinson University. As already hinted on, he featured prominently in the college basketball team, Fairleigh Dickinson Knights while studying broadcast journalism. As a part of the team, Seth was thoroughly coached by Al Lobalbo between 1974 and 1978.
Upon graduation from college, he worked as an assistant coach from 1978 to 1990 and as a head coach from 1990 to 2012. He started his work as a head coach with Long Beach State University’s men’s basketball team that promoted him from assistant coach to associate head coach in 1987 before making him the head coach in 1990. He then went ahead to work as the head coach for South Florida Bulls men’s basketball team from 1996 to 2003. His final stint as a head coach was at Virginia Polytechnic Institute And State University (popularly known as Virginia Tech) which lasted from 2003 to 2012.

Seth Greenberg is married to Karen Greenberg who has borne three daughters for him. His three daughters are named Paige Greenberg, Ella Greenberg, and Jacqueline Greenberg. Again, on December 20, 2017, Seth made a tweet explaining that he has 3 daughters that had graduated from college and that one of them was in law school. He further explained that the one in law school also played college volleyball as well as received Villanova education. But he did not specify which of his daughters he was laying stress on. But all indications point to his last daughter Jacqueline.
