Rex Burkhead was born on the 2nd day of July 1990 in Lexington City of Kentucky, United States. He spent his early years in Dallas, Texas where he completed his high school education at the Plano Senior High School. While he was there, Rex was able to get his football career to a start. Meanwhile, he was a multi-purpose athlete; he competed in football, basketball, and track events organized by the school. Amazingly, he was among the Class 5A basketball team that participated in the state championship during his senior year. In football, Rex led the football team to the semifinal of the state championship.

For his college career, Rex Burkhead enrolled at the University of Nebraska. In his freshman year, Rex made nine appearances for the school team and had a total of three touchdowns and 81 receptions with 346 yards. The following season, the running back featured in 14 games for the Cornhuskers and made a total of seven touchdowns and 172 receptions while rushing for 951 yards. He earned his first All-Big Ten team honors in 2011 after having an impressive record of 15 touchdowns and 284 carries for 1,357 yards. In his last season, Rex had five touchdowns and 98 carries for 675 yards. Upon graduation, the football star got a degree in history and was named among the 15 National Foundation Scholar-Athletes of 2012.

Joining the NFL draft of 2013, Rex Burkhead was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the draft. After the draft, Rex penned down his four-year rookie contract in May 2013. He further made his pro debut in their game against the Baltimore Ravens in November of the same year. However, Rex’s rookie season was cut short due to a hamstring injury that caused him to miss out on several games. Becoming active the next season, Rex played only nine games for the team. He had a total of one touchdown and nine rushes for 27 yards at the end of the season.

During the 2015 season, Rex made 10 receptions for 94 receiving yards and four rushes for four yards. He recorded significant improvement in his game in 2016, pulling off 17 receptions for 145 yards as well as 74 rushings for 344 yards with two touchdowns. At the termination of his contract in 2016, Rex signed up with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal worth $3.15 million.

With the Patriots, Rex made his debut in their season opener against Kansas City Chiefs on 7th September 2017. Although the Patriots lost the game, Rex was able to make three rushes covering 15 yards and one catch for 8 yards. At the end of the season, he notched a total of 64 carries for 264 yards and 30 receptions for 254 receiving yards.

Prior to the inception of the 2018 season, Rex Burkhead signed a three-year contract extension deal with the Patriots. While the season was ongoing, he suffered an injury in their week 3 game against the Detroit Lions which landed him on the injured reserve list in September 2018. After being away for about four weeks, Rex returned to the active roster on 26th November 2018. He then was able to finish the season’s game with 12 carries for 41 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 28 yards. Burkhead had the game’s longest run from scrimmage (14 yards). He helped the Patriots defeat the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 13–3 after finishing with 43 rushing yards and having the longest rushing play of the game (26 yards).
