Though he is popularly known by his stage name RM which was derived from Rap Monster, the rapper was born Kim Nam-Joon on September 12, 1994, in Ilsan-gu, SouthKorea. The rapper spent much of his childhood in his hometown where he received his early education with his three siblings.
He developed a passion for music in his fifth grade after listening to South Korean hip-hop group, Epik High. Before long, his music taste changed to rap when his high school teacher introduced him to the award-winning American rapper, Eminem. Being a highly brilliant kid, Rap Monster’s parents gave him a hard time about pursuing his musical career. The couple wanted him to focus on education while the rapper didn’t want the distraction of classes. They later agreed that he could pursue his dream without dropping out of school. In 2009, he became an idol trainee and also a student of Global Cyber University where he majored in Broadcasting and Performing Arts.
