The British monarchy is not the only royal family swimming in healthy doses of wealth and drama at the moment. Another European royal family that matches them on both fronts is the Monaco royal family. Headed by His Serene Highness Prince Albert, and his wife Princess Charlene, the family superintends over one of the wealthiest nations in the world. They have consequently built up a massive family fortune in the process and live the enviable lifestyle, rubbing shoulders with statesmen, champion athletes, and celebrities alike.
All that glitters is, however, not gold and Princess Charlene and Prince Albert have had their fair share of personal troubles in the course of their two-decade-long romance. From multiple allegations that the hitherto-playboy Prince had fathered some children out of wedlock to insinuations that the Princess nearly did not go through with the wedding, there has been one scandal after the other. The couple has managed to hang on though. There are however new love child claims on the horizon in 2021 and it would be interesting to see if they can weather it.
Prince Albert Has a Billion Dollar Fortune While Princess Charlene’s Wealth is Less Than a Quarter of a Billion
Princess Charlene and Prince Albert have a combined net worth of about $1.150 billion. Individually, the princess is worth $150 million while her husband is worth a massive $1 billion, making him one of the richest royals in the world. Prince Albert’s massive fortune is understandably due to his position as the head of state of one of the wealthiest nations in the world.
Monaco may only be a tiny municipality next to France but it has a famous reputation as the playground of billionaires. About 32% of its population are millionaires and it boasts of lavish casinos and glamourous sports and arts events. Prince Albert reportedly owns about one-fourth of the lands of the municipality. He has also purchased pricey real estate in other parts of France, including La Turbie and Marchais, as well as the USA where he shelled out $750,000 to purchase his mother’s childhood home in Philadelphia. Other components of the Prince’s wealth include his shares in Société des Bains de Mer, a public company that owns and operates the lucrative casino, opera house, and Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo.
On her own part, Prince Albert’s wife, Princess Charlene, has a personal fortune of $150 million. This is as a result of her status as the Princess of Monaco which most probably means that she owns shares in the principality’s major public company, Société des Bains de Mer. She is also likely to have her own private investments as well as a share of her husband’s massive real estate portfolio. The former Olympian athlete meanwhile occupies herself these days with numerous activities aimed at making the world a better place.
She is the founder of the Princess Charlene Foundation which is aimed at reducing the incidents of drowning amongst youths by teaching them how to swim, raising awareness about the dangers of water, and providing lessons on preventative measures. The princess has also gone beyond to work with organizations such as the Foundation for Aids Research (amfAR), Princess Grace Foundation USA, Nelson Mandela Foundation, and the Red Cross Society.
There is a 20-Year-Age Difference Between The Couple
Prince Albert was born on the 14th of March 1958 in the Prince’s Palace in Monaco. He is nearly 20 years older than his wife, Princess Charlene, who was born on the 25th day of January 1978 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (present-day Zimbabwe). The couple first met each other at a swimming competition in Monaco in the year 2000. They took a shine to each other and subsequently commenced a relationship.
The two kept their romance out of the public eye for the next five years. They then made their official public debut at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics. The couple would make more joint appearances over the years at several prestigious ceremonies before finally getting engaged on the 10th day of June 2010. They subsequently tied the knot in an exquisite ceremony, which cost about $70 million, in July 2010. It must be noted that this expensive wedding nearly did not go through as the bride reportedly sought to escape as a result of the surfacing of allegations that her man had fathered another love child while they were together.
The Prince and Princess Have Stuck Together Despite Multiple Claims of Infidelity
It must be noted that Prince Albert has been mired in several paternity suits over the years. Back in 1986, the prince reportedly had relations with German model Bea Fiedler. The romance resulted in the birth of a son named Daniel and the model filed a paternity suit. Her suit was however dismissed after a blood test found that Albert was not the father of her son. Bea has protested this, saying that the sample provided was not genuine and her son keeps on pursuing her claims to this day.
Fast-forward to 1992, an American realtor named Tamara Rotolo filed a paternity suit claiming that Prince Albert fathered her daughter Jazmin Grace (b. March 1992). There was a lot of wrangling over her claims but DNA eventually proved it to be true and Albert officially accepted paternity in 2006. These first two claims did not bother Charlene much as the liaisons took place at a time that she hadn’t started dating the prince. It was a different ballgame though when a Togolese lady named Nicole Coste claimed that the prince had fathered her son named Alexandra Coste (b. August 2003). This was at a time that Charlene had gotten to know Albert but she choose to overlook it as their relationship was not too serious at that time. She, therefore, had no troubles forging good relationships with Alexandra and even Jazmin. The straw that, however, threatened to break the camel’s back was in 2011 when it emerged once more that the prince had another love child suit hanging on his neck.
The child was reportedly born by a Brazilian lady on the 4th of July 2005. This was at a time when he was already in a deep relationship with Charlene and as you can tell, this latest revelation broke the South African lady’s heart. She reportedly made about three attempts to run away from her own wedding but all failed as the prince’s entourage allegedly confiscated her passport and pressured her to go ahead with the wedding. She yielded and the lavish wedding went ahead as planned. They were later reports that the bride did not look so happy at the wedding and that she subtly shed tears at several points of the ceremony. The prince’s entourage denied these reports, but they confirmed that the couple spent their honeymoon in different hotels for practical purposes.
Princess Charlene and Prince Albert remain together to date and one thing that has definitely helped their marriage survive is their twin children; Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, born on the 10th of December 2014. Both kids are already growing into style icons and have differing personalities. It is not yet Uhuru for Princess Charlene and Prince Albert though. They had a tough 2020 in which the prince contracted covid-19. The Brazilian lady who allegedly had a daughter for him also filed a formal paternity suit. Prince Albert has described her claims as a hoax as well as attempted fraud and blackmail. Princess Charlene was none too happy with this and was spotted with a bizarre punk-goth hairstyle after the news. It remains to be seen what will happen to the couple’s union but my bet is on them remaining together.
