Philip Rivers’ Biography

The NFL star was born as Philip Michael Rivers on the 8th day of December 1981 in Decatur, Alabama in the United States. Along with his brother Stephen and sister Anna River, Philip was raised by American parents Steve and his wife Joan Rivers. His father was a former football player and a high school football coach while his mother is a teacher. He spent his early years in Decatur before his family moved to Athens. While there, the quarterback enrolled at Athens High School where he played football with the school team.

After he joined Athens high school football team, Philip quickly made his mark and became the best passer in the state of Alabama. His wonderful playing style made him a hotspot for top Universities who wanted to recruit him to their college team. Philip, knowing what he wants, accepted offers from North Carolina State University where he was convinced he would have much playing time.

Playing for the Wolfpack football team turned out to be the best decision after all. Philip helped the team to maintain an 8 – 4 record while leading them to victory at the MicronPC Bowl in 2000. In the end, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the competition and equally earned the Freshman of the Year Award.

In his remaining three college seasons, Philip recorded 16 touchdowns while covering 2,586 yards as a sophomore in 2001. He also won his second MVP Award after leading the Wolfpack to the Tangerine Bowl. Although the Wolfpack got to the finals of the competition, they eventually lost to the Pittsburgh Panthers. The following year, the player led his team to the Gator Bowl after an impressive season.

The Wolfpack defeated Notre Dame 28 – 6 to win the competition. He also won the Gator Bowl’s MVP Award that year. Philip also led the Wolfpack to the 2003 Gator Bowl where they defeated the Fighting Irish to become champions. He got double honors both as ACC Player of the Year as well as ACC Athlete of the Year.

Professional Career

Following his excellent college records, Philip was projected to be among the top prospects of the 2004 NFL draft. During the draft, he was chosen by the New York Giants and was eventually traded to the Los Angeles Chargers on the draft night. Meanwhile, Philip Rivers was the fourth player overall after Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger. He signed up with the Chargers with a whopping rookie contract worth $40.5 million in August 2004.

Joining the Chargers lineup, Philip was placed as the third-string quarterback in his rookie year behind Drew Brees and Doug Flutie.
