Named after the 16th-century composer Orlando Gibbons, Orlando Bloom was raised in the Church of England together with his elder sister Samantha in Canterbury by his mother Sonia Bloom. Bloom attended St. Peter’s Methodist Primary School, The King’s School Canterbury and St Edmund’s School in Canterbury to pursue his education.

Despite suffering from mild dyslexia, Orlando Bloom and his sister Samantha embraced arts since childhood due to their mother’s encouragement and in 1993, Bloom shifted to London to attend a course in Drama, Photography, and Sculpture at Fine Arts College, Hampstead. At the age of 16, he joined the National Youth Theatre and after two seasons he won a scholarship to the British American Drama Academy, London.

The first film in the trilogy The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001 and was a huge blockbuster success. The movie earned over $871 million worldwide, and became the second highest grossing film of 2001 in the U.S. and worldwide making it the fifth highest grossing film of all times.

Bloom reprised his role as Legolas in the follow-up of the trilogy; The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Both of these movies earned high critical acclaim and established Bloom as an international star. The series earned a nomination for Best Ensemble Acting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for all cast members three years in a row. Finally the last in the series, The Return of the King brought the award in 2003. In addition, Orlando Bloom has also been honored by the European Film Awards, Hollywood Festival Award, Empire Awards and Teen Choice Awards during different stages of his career.

His other lead roles include Balian in the Kingdom of Heaven and as Drew Baylor in Elizabethtown in 2005. He continued the role of Will Turner in the sequels of the Pirates of Caribbean Series. Orlando Bloom has also appeared in stage roles including the revival of In Celebration in London in 2007 while he also made his Broadway stage debut as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet in August 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
