While insuring valuables like cars and houses is a common routine among the regular people, for celebrities however, it extends to body parts. Diva Mariah Carey is known to have one of the most outstanding voices in the music industry, and thanks to that, she’s a star, so when TMZ broke the news that she paid $35 million to insure her voice before extending her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour to include South America it was justifiable though the price tag came as a stunner to some. But the Hero crooner didn’t stop there, she scooped out another $35 million to insure her legs, and we’re not exactly sure if the word justifiable applies to this one, but what do we know right? we don’t have a net worth of $520 million. The additional gam insurance brings the total “scar policy” (as such practices are so called) to a whopping $70 million. It appears the billionaire’s fiancee isn’t only worried her vocals could go gaga but also of breaking some limbs falling off the towering heels she struts on stage. The $70 million price tag just makes us wonder if Mariah Carey’s voice and legs are the most expensive in the entertainment industry. Also, each of the policy comes with a very expensive monthly premium costing thousands of dollars.
But this is not the first time news have surfaced about Mariah insuring her gam, back in 2006 when she joined Gillette’s Legs of a Goddess campaign, it was rumored that the Touch My Body singer insured her legs for $1 billion.
But don’t be too harsh on Mimi, she didn’t start it. The scar policy has been in existence from as far back as the silent film era and is thought to have originated from Ben Turpin, the silent film actor who insured his signature cross-eye for $20,000. In recent times, other stars have followed suit, insuring whatever parts they perceive as the most marketable. Among them include Julia Roberts who reportedly insured her “smile” for $30 million, Tina Turner covered her gam for $3.2 million, Madonna insured her breast for $2 million while J Lo denied insuring her derriere for a few millions.
Mariah, we presume would be back on the tabloids soon as we eagerly await her wedding to Australian billionaire James Packer. About the wedding she has been quoted saying; “I’ve picked a lot of things that I can’t tell, It’s not going to be a big wedding, but it’s going to be grand”. From her words, we won’t be surprised if the wedding makes it to our list of most expensive celebrity weddings. Among Mariah’s other valuable assets is the 35 carat giant ring she received from her groom-to-be. We do wonder if she’s got an insurance policy on this one too.
