It’s not even Valentines day yet and there’s already lots of love in the air. A few days ago in New York city, James Packer popped the big question to “Heartbreaker” singer Mariah Carey like a billionaire with a massive 35 carat D internally flawless diamond and platinum engagement ring estimated by experts to be in the tune of $10 million.
For those who’ve been hiding under a rock, Australia’s 3rd richest man James Packer,48, and music diva, Mariah Carey,46, have been dating for barely a year now. The duo met at a movie premiere in Aspen Colorado and have since grown from friends to lovers. The proposal was capped off with a grand party at the Eleven Madison Park, where the musician was spotted with all smiles, rocking her new big rock.
It appears the billionaire businessman didn’t want anything short of perfection in the making of the ring, which is why he picked New York jewelry designer Wilfredo Rosado (who have been close friends with Mariah for over two decades and obviously would know what would blow her mind) to be the brainchild behind the ring’s design. Rosado has also made jewelry for top Hollywood stars like Olivia Wilde and Julia Roberts.
Afterwards, he was interviewed by Vogue and these are some of the things he had to say about the bling which took him and his army of craftsmen two weeks to design;
I took the standards super high, and I wanted to create a ring that could not be measured up to. What is really most interesting about the ring are the proportions—the stone is so large, but we were able to create a beautiful balance with the overall simplicity of the design.
It was about mixing simplicity with volume, which is very difficult to do.
We have the same taste, and when it came down to it, I really wanted to create something for her that was about new beginnings. I wanted to give her something super sophisticated and something that took away all of the embellishments that a lot of people use when they design engagement rings these days.
But it is epic. It’s an epic ring for an epic time in her life. This was the most challenging piece of jewelry I’ve ever designed. I wanted to create the most gorgeous ring for my dear friend, but I also wanted to create the most stunning ring for one of the most iconic divas of our generation.
It won’t be an overstatement to say that Mariah’s engagement ring is the biggest in the world because it beats in size and price those gifted to her female counterparts. Just to clarify, Beyonce got an 18-carat from Jay Z, Angelina Jolie got 16-carat from Brad, while Kim got 15 carats from rapper Kanye West. None even comes half as close as hers, which goes a long way to validate Rosado’s words- “It is an EPIC ring”.
The couple which is both almost in their fifties may not appear to many as the perfect match but they’ve both got some interesting things in common. In addition to almost being age mates, and also being stinking rich, the couple has been in two previously failed marriages.
Mariah parted ways with her first husband Sony Head, Tommy Mottola after four years of marriage. After staying single for almost a decade she married younger actor and TV personality Nick Cannon who proposed with a 17 carat $2.5 million bling. With him, she has 4-year-old twins whom they both have mutual custody.
Packer, on the other hand, has been attracted to supermodels. His first marriage to Jodhi Meares lasted 3 years while his second to Erica Packer with whom he has three kids lasted 6 years before they parted ways in 2013. His two-year engagement to actress Kate Fischer never made it to the aisle. We do wonder if this engagement would lead to their third journey down the aisle and if that does happen, I bet it would make the list of the most expensive celebrity weddings.
