Facts & Everything You Need To Know About Lachlan Watson
- Their Three-Part Opera Gender Journey
Lachlan Watson prefers to describe their gender journey as a three-part opera which explains the emotional struggles the gender-neutral actor endured throughout their teens. According to the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star, they had a painful indescribable experience as a female and was disdained each time they looked in the mirror. However, their journey to self-discovery began as a teenager. The first part centers around a fresh teen Watson who at the age of thirteen realized they were attracted to girls and so identified as a cisgender lesbian.
But still quite unsettled and needing to totally reject their femininity, Lachlan came out as Trans nearly two years later – the second part of their journey. During the years they identified as trans, they experienced gender dysphoria at its peak. In other words, the actor experienced the emotional effects which were resultant from their disconnect between their gender identity and biological sex.
The third part of their three opera journey came two and a half years later when the actor made the decision to reside inside the gender void and came out as non-binary. Identifying as non-binary means Watson is free to reside in all areas of the gender spectrum. In other words, the actor does not totally identify as male nor as female, but exists somewhere in the either/or, neither/nor space. In order to totally conform to and achieve a more consistent look with their sense of self, Watson underwent a procedure to remove their breasts.
Being identified as a non-binary or queer individual feels a lot more refreshing for Watson as they need not be confined to a linear path. The actor’s identity requires them to use gender-neutral pronouns (they/them) for themselves. More so, Lachlan Watson who identifies themselves as both non-binary and pansexual does not in any way relate their gender identity to their sexual orientation. For now, they are happy to just be themselves and see what follows after.
- Their Own Experiences Informed Susie Putnam’s Character In CAOS
The gender-neutral actor also plays a non-binary character on the Netflix teen drama Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. In the original script for the show, Susie Putnam, who is one of Sabrina’s best friends at school, was written as a trans man who came out early in the series. Susie’s storyline focuses on their journey with their own gender identity.
Lachlan Watson identifies as non-binary and thus used some of their own personal experience to play the role of Susie who eventually metamorphosed into a queer Theo. Lachlan Watson was a recurring character on the first and second parts of the show. They have been promoted to series regulars for third and fourth seasons of the hit Netflix series.
For the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star, it was really important to them to play a character that represented a new kind of queer person. They were one of the youngest non-binary actors in Hollywood when the show debuted and they are proud to be telling the queer storyline right. Lachlan Watson hopes that the way Theo’s story has played out will be the future TV representation of queer people. They hope that queer actors will always be given a chance to play queer characters in the industry.
- Watson Is An LGBTQ+ Activist
As one of the youngest self-identified non-binary actors, Lachlan Watson is an outspoken advocate/activist for LGBTQ+ rights and community. Notably, the gender-neutral actor was featured on a 2018 Netflix produced talk segment titled, What I Wish You Knew: About Being Non-Binary.
More so, they are one of the LGBTQ+ voices and allies who have partnered the Unilever brand for its United We Stand initiative. In the campaign, Watson and other activists align to raise awareness about the lack of accessibility of beauty products in the queer community. The actor claims to have never seen themselves reflected on a commercial nor to anyone onscreen in their lives. Thus, Lachlan Watson’s campaign with the Unilever brand feels so incredible and surreal for the non-binary actor.
