Early Life

He was born on the 27th of January, 1959, in New York City as Keith Theodore Olbermann. Theodore Olbermann, a commercial architect, and Marie Katherine, a preschool teacher are his parents.

Keith is of German ancestry and he was born into a family of two, with a younger sister named Jenna. His childhood was a prelude to what would define his life as a professional, falling in love with sports, specifically baseball. His passion stayed with him through high school at Hackley School where he became a play-by-play announcer for a local radio station, WHTR.

After graduation, Keith Olbermann joined Cornell University where he studied Communication and continued to work as a sportscaster at WVBR, a student radio station. He graduated from college in 1979 and began his professional career at UPI, a paper publication and at RKO Radio Network, spending two years at both media outlets before joining CNN in 1981.

He joined CNN as a sportscaster and worked on various major events, including the 1980 Winter Olympics. Before he moved on to ESPN, Keith Olbermann spent some time working for other media houses like WCVB-TV, KTLA, and KCBS. Keith joined ESPN in 1992 and began to work on its signature show, SportsCenter. His time at ESPN was both a mixture of professional excellence and controversy as he repeatedly clashed with the management of the sports network over his utterances or behaviour.

Eventually, Keith Olbermann left ESPN in 1997 and joined one of its rivals, Fox Sports Net in 1999, where he began to host the sports show, National Sports Report. The show did not last on-air and shortly after he began hosting, it ended and he began to host another, The Keith Olbermann Evening News. He spent two years at Fox Sports Net and worked in other roles as a sports personality for other media outlets such as ABC, The Ringer and made a return to ESPN.

In between his time moving from one media station to the other as a sports journalist, Keith Olbermann worked as a news journalist and covered a variety of stories in social commentary and politics. He covered some of these stories under the umbrella of MSNBC, where he anchored the show, The Big Show with Keith Olbermann and Countdown with Keith Olbermann for the network.

He has also worked for GQ Magazine as a special correspondent and also hosted his own web series, The Closer with Keith Olbermann.

Other than his media personality roles, Keith Olbermann is also an actor who has appeared in a number of TV shows, such as 30 Rock and BoJack Horseman. He is also a published author with several books, including Truth and Consequences: Special Comments on the Bush Administration’s War on American Values.
