Born in Florida, USA on 4th June 1976, Elizabeth Scherer is an American citizen with Caucasian-White ethnicity. Scherer’s early year’s details, as well as her early school years, are not yet revealed but after high school, she went to Florida State University where she earned a degree in English. Afterward, she moved to the University of Miami for a degree in law. Her career officially began in 2012 after obtaining her J.D. from the latter University.
Judge Elizabeth Scherer was born into a Christian family and her father’s name is William Scherer. She also has John J. Scherer and William R. Scherer III as her siblings. She has not said a thing about her mother.
Scherer’s father is a popular litigator in Fort Lauderdale. He is best known for being among the legal team representing George W. Bush during the disputed election ballot in the Broward County recount of 2000. William is also known for co-founding the Conrad & Scherer Law Firm. In addition to his litigation practice, the legal practitioner also rendered his services as counsel to various government entities including as the North Broward Hospital District’s General Counsel where he supervised all the malpractices in the healthcare center and was involved in making decisions for or against the Hospital District. She Started off as an Assistant State Attorney
Judge Elizabeth Scherer kicked off her career in 2001 after her admission to the Florida Bar. At the Broward state attorney’s office, she began her internship and after a few months, she chose to focus her legal career on criminal law. Elizabeth worked as an assistant state attorney from 2001 to 2012 when she was appointed as Broward Circuit Judge, replacing David Krathen who returned to private practice. She was again appointed to hold the same office in 2014 as she ran unopposed. Her tenure is therefore expected to end on January 4, 2021. During her appointment, she was described as one who is hard working, intelligent and fair. She is said to have an excellent record as a prosecutor.
Judge Elizabeth Presided over Accused Parkland Shooter
The Parkland shooting case is one of Scherer’s most controversial cases since her close to a decade-long tenure in office. The judge who has in the past done little to gain public attention became a trending personality after she was assigned to preside over Nikolas Cruz’s murder case of 2018. Cruz, a Parkland teenager was arraign before Judge Elizabeth Scherer for admitting to the killing of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Elizabeth became more popular after making a buzz on social media with her vow to curb what the media reports as she steps up further in her professional career. Despite being asked to step aside from the case by Cruz’s lawyers Elizabeth insisted presiding over the case and ensuring the accused got a fair trial. Cruz is charged with 17 counts of murder and while his prosecutors are seeking a death sentence for him, Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer said in May 2019 that he would plead guilty for a life sentence.
Her Ex-husband Faced Drug Trafficking Charges
Currently, Judge Elizabeth Scherer is not married to anyone but she once had a husband named Anthony Mercer. Although it is not known when the two were married, according to reports, Scherer was married to Mercer for seven years before their divorce in 2009. Mercer was arrested for being in possession of 21 prescription pills, an ounce of cocaine, and a pound of marijuana. Mercer claimed he wanted to sell the drugs to pay his rent. He was, however, released the day following his arrest and on the same day, Scherer filed for divorce. They have a daughter whose name is not yet made public.
She is into Social Works
Despite her very busy career, Judge Elizabeth Scherer still finds out time for social works. The Circuit judge is among the board of directors for Voices for Children. She is also a volunteer for Saint Anthony Catholic School Friends for Education and Saint Anthony Catholic School’s faculty member at. She was even named 2013 Judicial Advocate of the Year.
