How Josh Ovalle’s ADHD Affected His Early Life
Born in Seattle, Washington on the 21st of August 1998, Josh Ovalle grew up alongside his two brothers – Elijah and Lucas – who are almost as popular as he is in the entertainment industry.
Josh had a rough childhood as he suffered from a disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – a condition mostly characterized by a short attention span – which led to a lack of academic success, amongst other things.
While not much is known about his parents, it is obvious that they supported Josh by getting him the best possible care. This might be one of the reasons he was pulled out of his local high school and registered at Halstrom Academy at the age of 16.
According to the young director, he struggled with his schoolwork and his confidence was battered due to his poor performance and grades but he couldn’t help himself as his mind continued to wander. The change in school made a whole lot of difference in his life and studies as his academics improved considerably.
His Short Film, Minimum Max, Launched His Career As A Director
Josh Ovalle came into movie making and directing in his search for a way to cope with his ADHD. He was encouraged by his doctors to find an outlet to help him cope with his problem and he began to try his hands at different things.
Initially, he tried baking which worked for a while before he discovered his love for film making. His first stint at film making was a short movie titled Two and a Quarter Minutes (2014) which was co-written by his younger brother (Elijah). The film is about a teenage boy who dreams about what would possibly run through his mind in the last few moments before his death.
Josh not only directs his films, but he also writes them, and scriptwriting is one of his hidden talents that brought him to the limelight. However, the film that successfully launched him into the limelight is a short film titled Minimum Max (2015) which documented his struggles with ADHD. The short film gives a first-hand account of a high school student (Max) who must choose between making better grades or accepting his poor health challenge and poor grades. Through all this, his ultimate priority is to be happy in the end.
The film surprisingly garnered lots of attention and was screened in more than 20 film festivals around the country. The then 17-year-old Josh and his film were featured in a publication on “The Huffington Post” which helped the film to become more popular with millions of views. The short film also won two awards at the Seattle International Film Festival which includes the ‘Futurewave Prodigy Camp Scholarship’ and ‘Futurewave Shorts Audience Award’. By 2015, he had caught the attention of several powerhouse media houses as a budding talent. He soon joined MTV as a promoter and worked on promotion for the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.
Josh Ovalle released his next work in 2017 titled Spendtime Palace: Sonora which he wrote and directed with Finn Wolfhard – who is best known for his role in Stranger Things. Some of his other works include The Norwegian Vampire Film as a producer and he also appeared in The Aubreys: Loved One musical video in 2020.
Considering the success he has had working on a handful of movies, Josh is definitely one to watch out for in the entertainment industry. Aside from writing and directing films, Josh is also into event promotions. He has promoted shows for the popular television channel, MTV, including its 2015 Movie Awards, which had the famous stand-up comedian and actress Amy Schumer as its host.
