The award-winning reporter was born on the 11th of May 1984, to Shean Yen Janice and David L. Kent, in San Francisco. Her father is American while her mother is Chinese, so Jo Ling Kent is of mixed race. She enjoyed a happy childhood, growing up in Minnetonka, a town in Minnesota. Ling attended high school in her area and established herself as an exceptional student. She excelled in both athletics and academics, serving as a member of the school’s figure skating teams and student government.

Upon graduating from high school, Jo Ling went on to Marshall Rice University where she concentrated on Art History, Asian, and Policy Studies. She completed her studies in 2006, then returned back to school right away to further her education. She spent two years at Peking University in Beijing, China, after which she joined the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she proceeded to earn her Masters’ degree.

Jo Ling Kent had many career directions that she wanted to pursue, but she eventually ended up pitching her tent with journalism. It was while studying in China that she began laying the foundations for what would become an excellent journalistic career. Her first job in the profession was at ABC News where she served as a web reporter. While living in China, she covered all sorts of stories in the region for the network from the 2008 Beijing Olympics to the Taiwan elections, the unrest that unfolded in Tibet, and the earthquakes that rocked Sichuan.

She went on to work for NBC in the capacity of an associate producer, as well as a general assignment reporter. Jo Ling learned a lot more about her chosen profession from behind the cameras and that prepared her for a future in front of it. In 2013, she left NBC for Fox News to work as their business news correspondent. After three career impacting years at Fox, she returned to NBC as a correspondent. Some of the stories she has covered for the network include the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, one of the deadliest and most horrifying events in American history.
