If you are a fan of comedic performances, then you are probably familiar with the slapstick king, Jim Carrey. Jim has been a part of up to 40 notable screen projects since 1981 when his professional career kick-started. But he seems to be losing the vibe in recent years, most likely because age is beginning to tell on him. On the bright side, Jim has a successor in the person of his daughter Jane Carrey. Nevertheless, she is not his successor in the most conventional sense of the word because she has taken more to the art of singing than acting, directing, and production like her father.
In all, Jane is an actress, a singer, songwriter and more. Being the daughter of a renowned screen star, she grew up in the right environment from where she nurtured her talent.
Jane Carrey’s Rich Family Background In Entertainment
The singer’s birth name is Jane Erin Carrey while her birth date is September 6, 1987. Jane was born at the very center of Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. Of course, that’s because her father was (and still is) a Hollywood professional. Her mother was Jim Carrey’s first wife, Melissa Womer who also achieved significant clout in Hollywood as we are going to explain.
Jane Carry’s parents got married in 1987, the same year Jane was born. They later divorced in 1995 when she was still very young. The divorce was amicable, enabling Jane to maintain cordial contacts with both of her parents.
Her Father’s Illustrious Position in Hollywood
Jim is known for his almost four-decade-long career in stand-up comedy, as well as film and TV performances. His works in movies have seen him in some of the biggest hit projects in the history of the industry – such as The Truman Show, Man On the Moon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and more recently, Sonic the Hedgehog. These are just a tip of the iceberg in Jim’s impressively long filmography of over 40 roles.
Since Jane’s father specializes in the comedic genres (which means his job is essentially to make people laugh), it comes as no surprise that he has so many fans across the world and has garnered over 40 notable awards along the line. In terms of the money bag, Jane Carrey’s dad has scooped up an estimated $150 million from his career.
Though mostly raised by her mother, Jane seems to be closer to her father. She has severally worked with him to raise funds to fight against autism.
Another instance that proves this is when Jane’s son Jackson was born on February 27, 2010. It was Jim Carrey who first proudly broke the news on Twitter.
Jane Carrey’s Mother Is Also A Hollywood Big Shot In Her Own Right
Everyone seems to know Jane Carrey as the daughter of Jim Carrey but not many people know her mother. As already said, Jane’s mother is Jim Carrey’s first wife, Melissa Womer (formerly, Melissa Carrey).
Born on July 8, 1960, Jane’s mother (Melissa) got married to Jim Carrey in 1987, but they divorced only 8 years later in 1995. Melissa is an actress and movie producer by profession and many comments have described her as being highly talented.
She is notable for appearing on the 1999 biographical comedy-drama, Man On The Moon. It is interesting to note that she was on the set of that film alongside Jim Carrey who was already her ex-husband by then.
Before this, however, Jane’s mom was also a cast member of an NBC legal drama series named Petrocelli way back in 1974. As a producer, she is credited for the 1997 satire, Real Stories Of The Donut Men and The Yesterday Show With John Kerwin which has been running since 2004.
Did Jane Become Famous Through The Influence Of Her Family?
From the foregoing, it can be easy for someone out there to begin to presume that Jane Carrey’s parents must have used their influence to make their daughter have undue advantage over others, resulting to her success. But nothing could be further from the truth. Rather, the singer had to make her way into the industry on her own.
Let’s make it clear that this is not because her relationship with her parents is not cordial. On the contrary, she has a very close relationship with both of her parents. Granted, her parents divorced in 1995 while she was only eight but, although she was more with her mother, Jane has shown that she has bonded with her superstar dad over the years.
We have not been able to find any record of her ever attending high school or college. But, she is said to have worked as a waitress for six years. Yet, this experience never deterred her from her childhood dreams of becoming a famous singer. Eventually, she made a grand entry into her singing career when she auditioned for the famous FOX singing competition, American Idol in December 2011. During the audition which held at Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, with Jennifer Lopez as one of the judges, Jane sang Something To Talk About by Bonnie Raitt. Unfortunately, she did not make it to the second round.
Again, this failure did not demoralize her as she kept matching on. Thus, she formed her own band named The Jane Carrey Band. They attained average fame, having performed in several places. Most, if not all of her songs such as Simple Beauty, Me and Mickey, and Breathing Without You, are performed with the band.
In 2017, Jane Carrey produced a short documentary about her father. The biographical documentary named Jim Carrey: I Needed Color, focused on exposing a less acknowledged part of her father, that is, his talent as a painter. She did this on her own without the help of her father.
In November 2018, Jane was featured as a co-host of MTV’s reality show Catfish: The TV Show. Again, needless to say, her family had no hand in this.
Jane Also Married An Entertainer
Being born and raised right inside Hollywood is bound to bring you in direct contact with entertainment stars. Jane Carrey didn’t stop at having both of her parents as entertainers, she also married one.
There is only one record ever, of Jane getting married. That’s her marriage to Alex Santana which took place in November 2009. Alex is a stage performer and a rock band leader. His stage name is Nitro and he leads a rock band named Blood Money.
Jane’s son Jackson was born only three months after her wedding with Santana. By the time Jackson was nine months old, his parents (Jane and her husband) were already separated. The divorce was finalized by the time Jackson was two years old. However, Jackson’s parents’ divorce was amicable and so, they agreed to have joint custody of their son.
So far, Jackson Santana is the only kid we have been able to trace to Jane Carrey.
