James Comey is no new personality in the American political institution especially as it relates to the emergence of Donald Trump as America’s 45th President. He served as the Director-General of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), just four years into his ten years term before he was ousted by President Donald Trump.
Prior to his dismissal, Comey has served or overseen several high-profile cases some of which include the investigations into Saudi Arabia’s Khobar Towers bombing and the prosecution of Martha Stewart. Since his dismissal, comedy has maintained a rather quiet life, although his name and story are never out of the news.
An Insight Into His Political Rise
Born on December 14, 1960, the American lawyer and former FBI director is a Yonkers, New York native, and son to Joan Marie Comey and J. Brien Comey. Also known as the grandson of the former commissioner of the Yonkers Police Department, William J. Comey, James is of Irish heritage.
He had his college education at the College of William and Mary, where he majored in chemistry and religion, he graduated in 1982. As for his Juris Doctor (JD), he obtained it in 1985, from the University of Chicago Law School.
James Comey launched into his career in 1985 just after his time at the Chicago Law School. He started as a law clerk for John M. Walker Jr., who at the time was the US District Judge in Manhattan, before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office and working for the Southern District of New York for a period of six years (between 1987 to 1993). Within this period, he also served as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division.
James served as the U.S. Attorney assistant between 1996 and 2001 and then served briefly as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, before he was confirmed Deputy Attorney General on December 11, 2003, under America’s 43rd President, George W. Bush. Following his efficiencies as a Deputy Attorney General, Barack Obama who became the 44th president nominated him as FBI’s director and he was confirmed by the Senate to serve in that position for ten full years beginning from September 4, 2013.
While serving as the 7th Director-General of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, James Comey raised his concerns over some critical issues in the country including the “unfair” treatment of the black Americans by the Police, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, among many others. He even presided over the investigation into Hillary Clinton‘s use of a private email server during her service as the Secretary of State. Comey was eventually dismissed from his work on May 9, 2017. Donald Trump, the U.S 45th president had, in a letter sent to Comey, stated his agreement to the Justice Department’s judgment that Comey cannot lead the Bureau effectively.
James Comey’s Beautiful Family Life
James Comey certainly has a lovely family. He is married to Patrice Failor, an American by descent and a strong advocate for foster children. Comey first met Failor at William and Mary College in Virginia in 1978, which they both attended. While James claimed he was first introduced to Patricia by a close friend and she then suggested to him to run for President of his dorm council, Patricia says she had seen him first at a cocktail party.
After a long talk between the two, Failor apparently was the first to know her husband was in love with her. They eventually got married in 1987 after they both graduated from college.
The two have been living together as a married couple for over three decades and counting. Within this period, they’ve had five lovely children together – actually, they had six, but one, their son named Collin died when he was just 9 days old.
The couple’s other children are Maurene Comey who is now a prosecutor famous for her involvement as a lead prosecutor in the child sex trafficking case of Jeffrey Epstein.
Another of his children is Claire Comey who previously attended the University of Richmond and was chosen to be the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper. Claire was also on an advisory committee for sexual assault response and prevention on campus.
James Comey’s other daughters are Kate Comey and Abby Comey; Abby played basketball while she was at the Greens Farms Academy. She was also interested in Volleyball. Meanwhile, not much information is available about Kate online.
Following the death of his son, Collin, James Comey now has only one living son, Brien Comey who played college basketball. He was a standout player during his days at Kenyon College in Ohio where he averaged 12.5 points per game. While he was still in school, he had hopes of following in the footsteps of his father by becoming a law enforcement officer.
How Tall Is James Comey?
James Comey is a very tall man. He is 6 feet, 8 inches tall which is equal to 2.03 meters. When he stands among others including the former president of the United States, Barack Obama, and President Donald Trump who are 6 feet 1 and 6 get 3 respectively, Comey’s height is very obvious.
Judging by his height, there are only less than 30,000 men in the United States who can match his height or even claim to be taller. One of which is his own son Brien Comey who played basketball at Kenyon College in Ohio and is the same height as his father.
With a moss green eye color and dark brown hair, James Comey’s body weight is recorded to be 110kg. This rightly complements his tall figure, giving him an athletic build that could have seen him through had he opted to play basketball.
Details About How He Acquired His Net Worth
Following the 2013 documents sent to the Senate while he was being cross-examined for the FBI position, it was revealed James had a net worth of $11 million. Before he took the work of FBI boss, Comey was Bridgewater’s general counsel hence in 2013, the investment management firm gave him a payout of $3 million dollars. This was what added to his fortune at the time.
More so, James Comey’s net worth included a family property in Westport, Connecticut which they bought for $3 million but sold in 2017 for $2.5 million. During his time as an FBI director, he was paid an annual salary of $172,100.
His net worth appeared to have increased following the release of his book A Higher Loyalty, which earned him about $2 million more. All of which influenced his total net worth.
After he was infamously fired by Trump, James continued racking in more money as his speaking engagements are said to bring him more money than his annual salary as FBI Director. Also, his media engagements are still pulling in the numbers for him hence there is no reason to believe his net worth will go down any time soon despite being out of a regular job.
His New Life Outside The Government
The former FBI boss might have been out of government, but he is not out of public life entirely. In as much as he has kept silent on a lot of things, he has given his opinions on a number of important topics and has continued to deliver lectures and speeches.
James Comey has delivered lectures at the different institutions including Howard University where he gave a convocation speech in 2017, as well as the College of William & Mary (his alma mater) where he taught on Ethical Leadership. He continued taking the course during the 2018–2019 academic year alongside assistant professor Drew Stelljes.
In addition to that, James Comey has also provided a number of op-eds on various issues including one he wrote in the Washington Post in 2019 on the controversy surrounding Ralph Northam’s black painted face in his medical school yearbook as well as the debate on taking down confederate monuments and memorials. He published another op-ed in the New York Times in 2019 ahead of the congressional hearing of Attorney General William Barr.
Since then, he has continued to maintain a very quiet life and only gives his opinion on things when very necessary.
