In the early 2010s, an entertainment news segment that touched on relationships would not be completed without the mention of what Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries shared. The pair grabbed headlines from the United States all the way down to Australia when they wedded, and even more so when it was revealed that they were going to go their separate ways. The length of time in which they were married was a point of discussion for almost everybody on the face of the earth, as the wedding described by the Washington Post as a media blitz came crashing down after just 72 days.
While it is not news that many high profile unions in Hollywood do not seem to go the distance, many people who were familiar with the couple said from the get-go, Kim and Kris did not look like they were meant for each other. They further said they were somewhat not surprised at the eventual breakup, only just how it all played out.
A lengthy and contentious divorce battle that lasted seven times longer than their 72-day marriage followed for the couple before they were able to reach a settlement and severe all ties between themselves. With everything seemingly all behind the pair now, here is a brief look at how the paths of the former lovebirds crossed and their journey to briefly becoming man and wife.
How Did Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries Meet
In October 2010, Kim Kardashian, who had just ended her relationship with Halle Berry’s ex, male model Gabriel Aubry, met Kris Humphries in New York while she was filming the E! reality spin-off series – Kourtney & Kim Take New York. The two started talking and in just a short period of time, they began their relationship.
The relationship between the pair was not public knowledge until Kim appeared courtside in a New Jersey Nets basketball game. Cameras at the arena had spotted her sending “I love you” signals with her hands to her man. A few days after that, the two made their first public appearance together, which signaled the start of a relationship, although they never confirmed that they were dating.
In January the following year, fans of the reality star did not need any more convincing that Kim and Kris were an item as she tweeted an old photo of her man with the caption; “I want my son to look like this!” A few weeks after that tweet sent her fans into a meltdown, Kim surprised everybody by telling MTV News that she was very much single. Nobody took her comments seriously, and rightly so as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were spotted out together celebrating her man’s 26th birthday on the 6th of February, 2011. A few days later, they posed side by side each other for photographers at a Prince concert in Manhattan.
By April 2011, Kim had fallen so head over heels in love with Kris that she invited him to tag along with the whole Kardashian clan for their family vacation to Bora Bora. Kris certainly felt the same way about his girlfriend, so much so that by the following month, on the 18th of May, 2011, less than a year after they first met each other, he asked for her hand in marriage.
The proposal took place at Kim Kardashian’s Beverly Hills home where she walked into Kris Humphries on one knee with a “Will You Marry Me?” sign written out in rose petals and a custom-designed, 20.5-carat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring. Kim, who later on spoke about her surprise and shock over the whole thing and how fast things seemed to have gone, accepted the proposal. Her family was also reported to have been surprised when Kim broke the news to them, with sister Khloe Kardashian telling MTV News that the family was having dinner when Kim walked in and told them she was getting married.
The Kardashian family had first thought that Kim was joking but there was no jokes about the expensive bling she was wearing. A 90-day-long engagement period followed for Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries before they went on to exchange marital vows on the 20th of August, 2011. The couple tied the knot in an extravagant ceremony at an estate in Montecito, California. The star-studded event, which had people like Ryan Seacrest, Julianne Hough, Lindsay Lohan, La La Vazquez, Eva Longoria and many of Humphries’ teammates in attendance, was filmed by the E! Network for a two-part, four-hour reality TV special titled – Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.
After the wedding, the pair jetted off to their honeymoon in Italy. Their time away appeared to be short as Kim was reported to have returned to the United States earlier than expected. It was however later reported that she rushed back to the country in order to attend the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. At the time, she sent out a tweet that read; “Back in the US and it feels sooo good! Had such a fun relaxing time away! Back to reality!”
In the weeks that followed Kim’s quick arrival back in the US, rumours began to fly around that the couple was not seeing eye to eye on many things. The rumors gathered momentum in the following weeks as some publications reported that an announcement on their separation was imminent.
On October 31st, 2011, media outlets around the world were sent into a spiral as news broke that Kim had filed for divorce from her husband after 72 days of marriage. In the court documents, she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her decision and listed the date of their separation as that day. Nothing was heard from Humphries aside from the statement he went on to release that said; “I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.”
The couple had signed a prenup before their wedding, which made many to think that the divorce proceedings will wrap up quickly. This did not happen to be the case as things became very hostile between the pair. On the 7th of November, 2011, it was reported that Kim travelled to visit her soon to be ex-husband in his Minnesota home in order to calm the brewing tensions. A few publications reported that the trip was an indication that the high-profile couple might soon be getting back together, however, this did not prove to be the case as Humphries, on December 1, 2011, filed a response to Kim’s petition, seeking an annulment rather than a divorce on the grounds of fraud, saying that the whole marriage was a ploy to boost the ratings of the Kardashian reality TV shows.
The next couple of months were rough for both Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries as they both had to deal with scrutiny from fans and the media, as the story of the plan to sell the Kardashian brand was bought by some people, others felt Kris was being a jerk, prompting him to be booed by fans from the stands in his next few basketball games.
Why Did They Split Just After 72 Days
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries’ separation was documented on the second season of the show, Kourtney & Kim Take New York, which began airing on the 27th of November, 2011. The show gave fans a look at what transpired between the couple and what exactly prompted Kim to call it quits after 72 days.
The first thing that caught people’s attention from the show was a clip in the preview where Kim and Kris were having a conversation about how she would balance her career and marriage. The exchange between the couple went as follows; “How am I going to have my career and live in Minnesota?” Kim asks her husband who suggests they should move to his hometown. In response, the basketball player says, “Baby, by the time you have kids and they’re in school, nobody will probably care about you.”
This statement by Kris, among other things that were revealed on the show, including a few verbal scuffles with members of the Kardashian clan, painted a picture of a guy that did not care about his wife and what she wanted to achieve in life.
Without having formally addressed the situation in some years, Kris Humphries, who retired from Basketball in March 2019, took to The Players Tribune to write about how the “brutal” ordeal affected his career. He wrote that he never intended to be famous in the way he would forever be remembered, instead, he was just an above-average basketball player that met a really famous girl and married her. He went on to say that he was really naive about how much his life would change due to the marriage, especially when it became clear it was not going to work out.
Kim Kardashian, who was quick in moving on from her ex-husband as she began dating rapper Kanye West in March 2012, later revealed that she was caught up in a relationship that she knew was not working but was, however, insistent on seeing it through because she was 30 years of age and most of her friends were married and having kids. She went on to add that it was during their honeymoon period that she became sure that it was not going to work out.
