Unsung is a 60-minute-long show that has been airing on TV One since November 27, 2008, with Gary Anthony Williams who has featured in no less than 138 episodes of the show, working as its narrator since 2009. Although he was into theatre and TV in Atlanta, Gary Anthony Williams whetted his skills by acting for the not-for-profit theatre group named Georgia Shakespeare located at the campus of Oglethorpe University. In the group, he is said to have acted as ‘Shakespeare’ severally.

While he was with Georgia Shakespeare, he was also working with Academy Theatre. In 1988, he became a member of Laughing Matters which has been widely described as the longest-running improvisational comedy troupe in Atlanta ever. He continued to perform with the improv comedy troupe until he relocated to Los Angeles, California, ten years later.

Since the inception of his career on stage in the late 1980s, Gary Anthony Williams struggled to excel in the film industry for over a decade. During such time, he managed to make guest appearances in one episode of the following TV series: In the Heat of the Night (1990), I’LL Fly Away (1991), The Client (1995), and Brimstone (1998). In the same period, he also played the roles of Dr. Ashton-Reeves in Radioland Murders (1994), Wallace in First Time Felon (1997), and Bus Driver in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997).

He eventually landed his breakout role in 2000 as Abraham ‘Abe’ Kenarban, the father of Malcolm’s best friend, Steve, in the comedy TV series, Malcolm in the Middle. His initial audition for a role in the pilot of the series was unsuccessful but he later scored the recurring role of Mr. Kenarban.

Becoming A Renowned Actor Didn’t Come Cheap

Following his relocation to Los Angeles in 1998, Gary Anthony Williams began to work in countless roles as an actor, as well as a voice actor. He scored some roles in movies and TV series, including End of Days, City of Angels, and The Amanda Show before starring in the comedy TV series, Malcolm in the Middle which he eventually played for 18 episodes from 2000-2006.

Towards the season finale of the aforementioned show, Gary joined the third season of David E. Kelley’s crime dramedy TV series, Boston Legal as Clarence Bell, a shy lawyer who often changes into a drag queen, Clarice, when contending hard situations. Regarding his character in the series, he said that David E. Kelley tapped into something that nobody else really knows about him, which is that he is really a very shy guy. The popularity of the series further projected him to a wider audience.

Having been finding it difficult to score roles in mega-hit movies, Gary Anthony Williams solaced himself in voice acting which eventually increased his height of fame. His voicing of Uncle Ruckus in the animated series, The Boondocks (2005-2015) established him as one of the highly talented voice actors in the film industry. Since then, he has appeared in several hit animated series, games, films and TV series including The Lion Guard, XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and The Internship.

He has featured in a handful of other movies and TV series, some of which are yet to be released. His most recent projects include Other Plans, Relatively Super, The Outlaw Johnny Black, Witness Infection, Arthur Prescott Promo, and WRZ: White Racist Zombies.

Gary Anthony Williams is married to another Georgian native whose name is given as Leslie Jean Billingsley. They live in Sherman Oaks California, three miles from North Hollywood and eleven miles from Woodland Hills. The couple has two children together – a son named Ethan Williams and a daughter named Belinda Williams.

They are obviously living happily with their daughter Belinda (Ethan is no longer living with them).
