She was born Demetria Dyan McKinney on the 27th of August, 1978 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to parents whose identities remain unknown. At the time of her birth, she was the second child of what would be seven children. Born to African American parents, her development in the world of performing arts began when she was four years of age, and started appearing on stage as both a singer and actress in school plays. As a singer, she performed in her local church and in school talent shows.
Her school, growing up was Fort Walton Beach High School and what was a decent upbringing soon turned sour when she became homeless at the age of 17, following her impregnation. However, being a brilliant woman, Demetria McKinney was able to resume school in Italy via scholarship, completing her basic education at Okaloosa-Walton Community College before she set out into the world to become a professional entertainer.
She made her debut appearance onscreen in Meet the Browns, playing the character Kim and after two years, got her second credit for her appearance in Why Did I Get Married? She got cast in one of her most significant roles, as Janine Payne in House of Payne. She played the role for six years from 2006 to 2012, appearing in 94 episodes.
