The Untold Truth of David Ortiz’s Shooting
On the 9th of June, 2019, fans of David Ortiz, aka Big Papi, and fans of the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins were left anxious when news broke that David had gotten shot while he was in a bar in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
Several stories emerged about the possible reasons for the attempted assassination, one of which included allegations that he was the target of a hit job by a drug lord because David Ortiz was having an affair with his wife.
Here is the untold truth about what happened and why David Ortiz got shot.
What Happened to David Ortiz?
On the said day, David Ortiz, during a visit to the Dial Bar and Lounge bar in East Santo Domingo, was shot by a single bullet in the back after he was ambushed by men who had been waiting for the baseball player at the bar earlier in the evening.
Along with David was his friend, Sixto David Fernandez and Jhoel Lopez, the latter of which was wounded in the leg during the shooting.
Following the shooting, David Ortiz underwent an emergency medical operation that lasted six hours, after which he was transferred to the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he went through another surgery. He recovered and was released from the hospital on the 26th of July, 2019.
Did He Have an Affair With a Drug Lord’s Wife?
When news broke of the shooting, several motives for the assassination began to swirl, a prominent one being that David Ortiz was having an affair with the wife of the drug lord who masterminded the hit job.
According to the alleged story, David Ortiz was having an affair with Maria Yeribell Martinez Garcia, a story backed with shreds of evidence such as a check for $84,500 paid to Maria by Ortiz to buy a Lexus vehicle a day before he was shot. The assassination was believed to have been ordered by Maria’s husband, Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, a drug lord.
However, as much as the story would make for a decent Hollywood flick, the truth is a little less dramatic. Maria Yeribell has denied any affair with David Ortiz, and further investigation of the attack has revealed that the former Boston Red Sox player was in fact, a victim of mistaken identity.
According to the investigations, the recon by the team of shooters, who were paid $30,000 for the assassination, had mistaken David Ortiz for his friend, Sixto David Fernandez. David had arrived at the bar wearing a similar shirt to Fernandez, while also sitting next to him, in the chair Fernandez was regularly known to occupy.
The investigation revealed that while a drug lord did mastermind the hit job, it was orchestrated because he suspected that Sixto Fernandez, who is his cousin, sold him out to Dominican drug investigators, rather than the dramatic tale of lover’s revenge that spread on social media.
So far, the Dominican authorities have arrested nine people in connection to the shooting, including Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, who has been charged with federal drug trafficking offenses in Texas.
Is He Still With His Wife?
Despite rumors of a possible affair, David Ortiz is very much still married to his wife, Tiffany. She came out in overwhelming support of her husband during the shooting and remained by his side during his medical recovery. They have remained together ever since.
David Ortiz and his wife have been together as husband and wife since 2002, and they have given birth to three children. Although they temporarily separated in 2013, they reconciled and have been together ever since. The couple resides in Miami.
