She then furthered her education, studying environmental science at Sarah Lawrence College. After she graduated in 1976, she went after a master’s degree in urban planning at Columbia University. Her thesis on solid waste management was considered groundbreaking and was studied for years to come.

Amanda began her professional career working for Gruzen & Partners, an architecture firm. In 1983, she began serving as the Vice President for planning and design, focusing on Battery Park City Authority. She was in charge of implementing and developing the design plans for the site. Her other notable projects during this time included the design and planning of the Red Hook Community Justice Centre and the Midtown Community Court. In 1990, she was offered a position as a member of the New York City Planning Commission and she accepted it. She was appointed Commissioner in 2002, and she held the job till 2013.

Carter Burden III. Their marriage ended in 1972. She then married Stevie J. Ross, head of Warner Communications. They were together from 1979 to 1981.
