Al Franken is an American politician who served in the US Senate from 2009 to 2018 when he resigned. Before becoming a politician, he had a very successful career as a comedian and a media personality who worked with Saturday Night Live as a writer and sometimes as a performer.
During his time as a senator, he remained one of the most respected senators and he served in many committees including the Committees on Energy and Natural Resources, Indian Affairs, Judiciary, as well as on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
Al Franken’s Biography
Inasmuch as it is as Al Franken that the comedian and politician has come to be known, he was born and named Alan Stuart Franken on May 21, 1951, in New York City. While his father Joseph Franken was a printing salesman, his mother, Phoebe Franken worked as a real estate agent.
Brought up alongside a brother, Owen Franken in a Reform Jewish family, he moved with his family when he was just four to Albert Lea, Minnesota where his father started a quilting factory which, unfortunately, did not survive for more than two years and that forced the family to move again to St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
As regards his education, the Al went to The Blake School from where he graduated in 1969 and then he went to Harvard College where he graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in political science.
With an interest in performing, he started comedy since his high school days together with his friend, Tom Davis. The two were later hired on Saturday Night Live (SNL) as writers and also performers. Al Franken worked with SNL from 1975 to 1980 and then from 1985 to 1995 and in the process, he earned seven Emmy nominations, winning three.
After he left SNL, he was engaged in other things including co-hosting a talk show together with Katherine Lanpher on Air America Radio from 2004 to 2007 when he decided to run for the US Senate on the 2008 election from Minnesota. Franken would later win the Democratic Party nomination before going on to defeat Republican’s Norm Coleman who was ahead by more than 700 votes but after a recount, Al took the day with 312 votes. He was re-elected to the Senate again in 2014.
At the heat of the #MeToo movement, Al Franken was accused alongside more than two hundred other celebrities and powerful men including U.S President Donald Trump of sexual misconduct. The then-senator was accused by up to eight women with accusations stretching back from 2003 to 2010. Following the accusations, he was called upon by both republicans and democrats in the Senate to resign. On January 2, 2018, he finally gave up his seat and resigned although he insisted some of the accusations were entirely false.
